Monday, June 20th 2016

Wow, this last month has gone fast.

Tuesday, grad is at 2. You can have two guests. I recommend against wearing heels as the stairs and riser are steep.

Please read this and pass it on!  https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2016/06/19/people-of-toronto-stop-putting-takeout-cups-in-the-blue-bin.html

Field trip is on June 27th.

Battery drive should begin tomorrow; we also have Charmaine in the afternoon.
This means your posters are beginning to be displayed on Tuesday.

Monday, June 13th, 2016

Language:  Research and plan your Public Service Announcement infographic about the Rose Ave battery drive. You need WWWWWH in order to do this. I suggest you start at www.toronto.ca.

Math:  Re-write your Probability test THOROUGHLY; you may use MMS to help you.
Also do the step-by-step sheet.

Science: Grade 6 start making the model and researching about the animal.
Grade 5 continue the sheets about the human body, and answer questions 1 and 2 about the hands' on activity we did today.

Grad is June 21st-you may invite two guests.

Wednesday, June 8, 2016

Thursday, June 9th, 2016

Hi good people! Although I was not at school today (actually I'm typing this on Wednesday night), I am with you in spirit. I am filled with disbelief when I look at the calendar and realize our time together is coming to an end. You have been a great class, and I am proud of the work you have done, but happier still to see the people you are becoming.

O-kay! I will stop with that and tell you that our final field trip will be Monday, June 27th.

Wednesday, June 8th, 2016

Everyone needs to study for the Probability test tomorrow afternoon. It will be based on Math Makes Sense so review that unit.
Grade 5s-it is very important that you hand in:

Social Studies portfolio, reflection, RAFT if you did not do so already

Science Forces and Structures project on tornadoes or earthquakes.

Grad invites for the afternoon of the 21st will probably go home on Monday. It is in the small gym so you may invite two guests. We expect to be finished by 3:30.

If your name is JS and you are on the cricket team you MUST get your permission form back and fill the safety part out.

Tuesday, June 7, 2016

Grade 5s- Your Forces and Structures project (tornadoes or earthquakes) is due tomorrow!
You have had more than a week to finish this with a lot of in-class time.

My email is corey-lyla.macaulay@tdsb.on.ca if you would like to send it to me on Google. docs. You may also print it at school.

Also do the sheets of information about the human body.

EQAO is over! Thank you for your hard work.

Tomorrow, we work on infographics, Science, and art with Charmaine!

Monday, June 6, 2016

Monday, June 6th, 2016

Grade 6 review Math.

Grade 5 your Science report is due (tornadoes or earthquakes). If you do not have hard copy, email it to me at corey-lyla.macaulay@tdsb.on.ca

Grad will be in the afternoon (probably 2 pm) on June 21st.

Friday, June 3, 2016

Overdue books!

Friday, June 3rd, 2016

Happy International Donut Day!

Grade 5 Science:  Please finish your short report.

EVERYONE:  Bring back library books and get enough exercise and rest.

Thursday, June 2, 2016

Rose Ave Water Bottles $4

Consider buying a Rose Ave water bottle.  It's hot in the school and we are trying to avoid disposable plastic water bottles. They are bad for the environment, the water is no cleaner than Toronto tap water (and is sometimes worse), and they cost more than purchasing one water bottle and reusing it.

Thursday, June 2nd, 2016

We are halfway finished the Grade 6 EQAO! Students have been working hard and parents/guardians should continue to support them but ensuring they are getting healthy meals, exercise, and lots of sleep!

ALL library books are due tomorrow. Please remember to bring them in!

Grade 6 Graduation June 21st afternoon. Parent invitations will be sent home.

June 10th is a professional activity day for assessment and reporting; therefore there is no school for students.

Homework:

Grade 5 Science:  continue your report (with a diagram and bibliography) on the effects of natural forces (tornadoes or earthquakes) on structures.
Everyone:  Metaphors sheet.

Begin thinking about your genius project. This will be an independent study. You need to pick a topic of interest to you that falls under the subjects of Science, Social Studies, Media, or the Arts. These are very broad categories. You will do your own research and report, which you will definitely share with me and the class in a gallery walk. That does not mean it has to be a poster or board. We will discuss next week. But for now-what would YOU like to learn more about?

Tuesday, May 31, 2016

Tuesday, May 31st, 2016

Day One of the EQAO is over, and I think we all learned that some people need more sleep, and we all need full water bottles.

EQAO testing for grade 6 will take place beginning May 31st. We will be prepping the students in-class…and there is much you can do at home as well if you wish.
HOWEVER, the best preparation for a test is for a student to arrive with:  a full stomach, adequate rest, lots of exercise, and a positive 'can do' attitude. Students and parents need to be aware that the EQAO results do NOT affect the student's report card or progress in school. They are a diagnostic assessment of learning in classes and schools as a whole, to help the education system determine where we are doing well, and where we can do better.

Programming will continue as usual in the morning, and field trips will resume after the test is over.
If you feel you need to do further preparation, you can download EQAO practice tests and have your child complete them at home. If you choose to download a test, please treat it as usual homework and do not put pressure on your child to spend more than their usual time on it. Your child may benefit from this review of their language and math skills. You may choose to do as many tests as you like (or none) and as much/little preparation as you prefer. It is up to you to mark and review the test with your child. Please see below for more information:
To download past EQAO practice tests:
1) Go to www.eqao.com and enter the English site.
2) Click “Parent Resources” (a blue link at the top of the page)
3) Click “Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, Primary Division (Grades 1–3) and Junior Division (Grades 4–6)”
4) Scroll down until you see the title “Student Assessment Booklets and Scoring Guides (test questions and examples of student answers).” Below this you will see links of past EQAO tests according to year.
5) Once you click on one of the year links, you will be able to download the Student Assessment Booklets (Language 1 – Reading, Language 2 – Writing and Mathematics), the Scoring Guides (which show you what a level 1, 2, 3 and 4 look like) and Multiple-Choice Answer Keys.

Thursday, March 3, 2016

Thursday, March 3rd, 2016

We had very low attendance today. I hope everyone got some rest and is at school tomorrow to do Math.

Wednesday, March 2, 2016

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016

That was a wonderful trip to Lake St. George Conservation Area. We learned about Natural Science (biology), Canadian History, teamwork, cooperation, survival skills, and how to be an Eco-leader. It is difficult to decide which was the best part, but for me it was inspiring to see the joy of learning in a natural environment.
Also, having a campfire with marshmallows in a snowstorm was definitely a new and beautiful experience.
Tomorrow we will spend the morning doing ecology related activities. Then it will be a Math afternoon as we present Measurement posters, and begin fractions.

Thank you parents for sending your children on this enriching experience!

Ms. MacAulay

You may not bring ANY electronics. We will have class cameras. Bring books or games if you think you won't have enough to do during our brief down time.

I am really looking forward to this time and think it will be an experience that brings our class together, while we learn a lot of Social Studies and Science.

Parents, I will post on this blog tomorrow night to share our day's activities. After that there will be no communication on Tuesday and we will be at the school by Wednesday at 2. Please pick your child up or expect them home by 2:30.

Lake St George is coming up. It's two nights/three days from February 29-March 2. This is a fantastic overnight trip that relates to leadership, environmental education, science, and social studies.
The cost is $30, and that includes the bus, rooming, food, and activities. The food will be halal and there will be vegetarian options.
If cost is an issue for you, you may pay over a couple of months, or speak to me. We do not want students to miss out on a valuable curriculum activity.

Tuesday, January 26th, 2016

We are having an ongoing problem in our classroom. Students are talking over each other and over the teacher and the Teacher Candidate. Sometimes students are missing instruction.
We need to solve this problem as it is disrupting the learning of the students who are talking, but also the learning of the class as a whole. It is also really rude.
You are encouraged to bring your ideas on this to class tomorrow.

Other homework:

Language:  Media-reflection

Math:  Math problem on area/ capacity. You will be handing this in. Use the Math Journal success criteria.

Social Studies:  Grade 5 concept map
